What information and high-value data should we provide to make our agency more accountable, improve public knowledge of our work, and create economic opportunity? How can we make information and data available in a timely and accessible manner?

End Abuse of the "State Secrets" doctrine

Legislation has already been introduced that would go a long way in increasing transparency, and in returning the Balance and Separation of powers between the branches of our government. It used to be that Courts, off the record, evaluated whether evidence constituted a "state secret" that prevented it from being given in a trial. The last 8+ years, however, "state secret" has been used to keep a trial from happening... more »

Publish AG Holder's daily schedule online

I've seen other government officials do this, and it seems like a good way to show the taxpayer what the principal (Attorney General) is doing on the job. You could also link public calendar items (speeches, ceremonies, etc) to the event page, which would provide more detailed information and allow interested citizens to RSVP or plan to attend.

On transparency

Hi DOJ, Thank you for this opportunity. President Obama has repeatedly stated that he prefers to move forward, rather than revisit the actions of the previous administration. As a result, we now seem to have a need for transparency due to the subsequent clouding. Since ALL crime everywhere is always in the past, justice was invented to provide closure, through legal, transparent means. Though I believe I have some comprehension... more »

You really want to be transparent?

Then publish, in a timely manner, the names of all politicans, and their conversations, who contact the DOJ to discuss, inquire or give an opinion on any case under the DOJ. Remember the Jane Harman affair?..clear cut case if there ever was one...and what happened?...Nothing. Want to share who squelched that? You want people to work with you? O.K., I have a deal for you. If you don't want to publish what I suggested... more »

On Transparency

Many citizens are extremely upset with the Department of Justice's failure to investigate and prosecute clear violations of the law. A few the things we are incensed about are these: The failure to prosecute those who have supported torture with insupportable legal opinions, those who ordered torture and other war crime behaviors, and those who have committed torture and other war crime behaviors, past and present. The... more »

Disclose Company Bio of "IdeaScale"

Considering that IdeaScale seems to be enjoying a huge governmental contract, supplying virtually ALL of the government agencies, (including, of course, the DOJ), I find it interesting that I cannot seem to find a company bio that lists officers, owners, or subsidiaries of "IdeaScale". In the interest of "transparency" may I suggest that EACH government website, including this one, using "IdeaScale" post a complete and... more »

The Department of Justice should live webcast all meetings

The Department of Justice should live webcast all meetings for proposed rule making and regulations where the public comment should take place. They should make these meetings available for on demand viewing and have the ability to have that content be indexed for video search. By doing this the public and stakeholders will be able to see the inner workings of the rule making process and make the content and proceedings... more »

Improve Foreign Agent Registration Act online disclosure system

In the wake of the Citizens United case, and the legitimate concern that the door might be open for foreign influence on the U.S. political process, improving the online data released from the disclosures that the Foreign Agent Registration Act—passed in 1938—requires. While the Foreign Agent Registration Unit is to be commended for getting some of this information online (here: http://www.justice.gov/criminal/fara/),... more »

Move administration of White House email servers to data center

Given past problems with millions of White House emails going missing, to comply with the law, the administration of the White House's email servers should be moved to an Information Technology department that does regular backups. There are data center backup and replication products that allow data to be recovered quickly and replicated to a second data center in the event of a failure in the primary data center.... more »

Make earmarks data available for download

The GOP has a database of earmarks. The collected data for earmarks should also be made available for download. This will allow the data to be analyzed. For example, an earmark may be important at a local level but at a national level a project that generates revenue, reduces energy usage, increases domestic power generation, etc. is more important. Investing in projects that generate revenue for the government means... more »

FOIA Dashboard

Given the fundamental contribution that the FOIA makes to transparent government, the ready access to concrete data about agency FOIA performance, and the opportunity to improve FOIA administration, FOIA should be a significant part of any federal open government dashboard. As we are sure you appreciate, the FOIA is at the core of the public’s right to know what the government is doing. The FOIA cannot be dismantled... more »
