Create centralized listing of research data sets/code books

Create a listing of all “research” data sets held by the various Bureaus and agencies within DOJ at a single location with basic information about that data. Data, itself, does not need to be housed there – just a list of data sets and elements along with descriptive information so that staff know what exists when planning research. (By research data set, I am referring to data repositories reflecting operational or other... more »

DOJ research conference

Sponsor an annual conference for research staff from various DOJ agencies/ Bureaus. This conference should allow DOJ-scholars to present their DOJ-research -- similar to a typical academic conference. This would allow DOJ presenters and DOJ audience members to exchange knowledge in a dynamic way with respect to what data may be available to complement a given project, or identify new questions or collaborative partners... more »

A means to report financial waste in law enforcement

There needs to be some place to report financial waste in law enforcement.

It looks like a lot of money is being wasted when someone is sentenced to up to 8 years in prison for stealing a $3.99 bag of shredded cheese.

A life sentence for 0.03 grams of methamphetamine is not the best use of resources either.

A way for defendants to get a somewhat reduced sentence in exchange for information leading to the conviction... more »

Judicial Bribery is endemic to our courts. Stamp it Out!

A recent note in the Yale Law Journal estimates judicial bribes at 1,000,000 per year in civil and traffic courts. The following comments are reported in detail on my website, www.bobpalmerphd.com.
Bribery is endemic to our courts, because those persons vested with authority to prosecute judicial bribery are indifferent. They fail to do their job.
In 2003 I complained to the L.A.D.A. that my former stockbroker... more »

Track arrest/conviction ratios by demographic on per-court basis

In my opinion, one of the biggest issues facing the DOJ is the disproportionate percentage of racial minorities who are convicted of committing crimes, in relation to the percentage of minorities who are charged with committing crimes. After someone is arrested, minorities are far more likely to be charged with a crime; after being charged with a crime, minorities are far more likely to be convicted; after being... more »

Government - Society Communication by Forums

All Government Agencies, Representatives, Senators, etc. should by Law, create a Forum, structured by Topics, in which all citizens might post Complaints, Doubts, Observations, Praise or Congratulations Messages, which the Forum´s organization must reply, in Public, in the Forum, in a reasonable lapse of time.

More Intuitive Reporting of Performance Information

The Department of Justice should look at best practices for reporting performance information currently in use by state governments. Due to the more restrictive budget climates faced by state governments, they are much further along in effectively collecting and reporting useful performance information to the public. The Government Accounting and Standards Board (GASB) has developed Service Efforts and Accomplishments... more »

National We-Tip Line : www.tip.gov

I am rather perplexed about there not being a Virtual Tip line.

For issues such as drugs or prostitution or other crimes
a Virtual Drop Box is just what the Doctor ordered.

Just like there is a 911 (national Emergency),
there needs to be a 411 Line with Regards to Tips.

REPORT: (A) Prostitution, (B) Drugs, (C) Crime, (D) Organized Crime, (E) Govt Corruption, (F) Local Police Corruption.

Prostitution is a huge problem... more »

Model OpenDOJ after the Top 5 OpenGov Sites

OpenDOJ was ranked among the bottom 5 OpenGov sites by the OMB, see link below:

http://www.ombwatch.org/node/10785

Suggestions for improving your process:

1) Allow the "off-topic" portal to remain OPEN. There in no need to modify the process for ideas that fall out-of-scope. The same transparent process will be equally effective for off-topic posts, and for in-house (intranet-based, employee) suggestions as... more »

Online Public Access to Victims Complaints and The Responses

I would like to see a method that would allow public oversight concerning law enforcement and DOJ responses to formal complaints about criminal activity/victimization. Separately we could press for the inclusion of organized stalking, or stalking by three or more perpetrators as a distinct category. Ideally, I would like to see an ONLINE daily or weekly log accessible to the public, showing all the different categories... more »

No more "lost" pedophiles - with a cost effective solution

It's common knowledge that police are generally only able to find a percentage of an area's pedophiles to question when a child goes missing. The manpower and lost time is very costly when trying to locate them. To make location instantaneous is very possible, cost-effective, and could also prevent recidivism and protect children from future victimization. A list of an areas known pedophiles along with their current location... more »
